The Chesterfield is from the early nineteen hundreds and was used as both a sofa and a day bed. As you are able to see through the images that the arms are mechanical and therefore able to be positioned into different angles, by adjusting the handmade brass handles that we designed and made. The images demonstrate the state of which this chesterfield came to us. At first you see an old worn down piece of furniture such as this and think how am I going to be able to re-upholster this and give it some character.
As you can see I removed all of the old upholstery and materials to its bare frame and then the whole transformation process began. We started by using only traditional materials such as herringbone webbings, springs, cord/flax, horsehair and many other materials that are used in traditional upholstery. I slowly rebuilt the back and eventually the seat using traditional methods. Eventually after few days we came to the calico stage and then to the phase where I had to cover it with leather. Once the leather had been positioned and finalised a combination of waxes and other products and a keen eye for detail helps to bring out the patina and character.
